چکیده

Philosophers have often attempted to use counterfactual conditionals to analyze probability. This article focuses on counterfactual analyzes of epistemic probability by Alvin Plantinga and Peter van Inwagen. I argue that a certain type of counterfactual situation creates problems for these analyses. I then argue that Plantinga’s intuition about the role of warrant in epistemic probability is mistaken. Both van Inwagen’s and Plantinga’s intuitions about epistemic prob-

The Future Has Thicker Tails than the Past: Model Error As Branching Counterfactuals

Ex ante forecast outcomes should be interpreted as counterfactuals (potential histories), with errors as the spread between outcomes. We reapply measurements of uncertainty about the estimation errors of the estimation errors of an estimation treated as branching counterfactuals. Such recursions of epistemic uncertainty have markedly different distributial properties from conventional sampling ...

Modals and a Compositional Account of Counterfactuals

Over the past twenty years, there have been numerous discoveries and theoretical proposals for modals in Romance and Germanic languages, as well as for conditionals and counterfactuals. But there has been little attempt to produce a compositional account of counterfactuals from an account of the meanings for the conditional and the modals.1 Here we present a detailed, dynamic semantics for moda...

On Scope Relations between Quantifiers and Epistemic Modals

is paper presents and discusses a range of counterexamples to the common view that quanti ers cannot take scope over epistemic modals. Some of the counterexamples raise problems for ‘force modi er’ theories of epistemic modals. Some of the counterexamples raise problems for Robert Stalnaker’s theory of counterfactuals, according towhich a special kind of epistemicmodalmust be able to scope ove...

Causation and the Semantics of Counterfactuals

Semantics of counterfactuals is normally developed according to the principle of similarity, and the key point is to specify the notion of relative similarity. It can be seen in specific examples that causation plays a crucial role in determining the independence of particular facts and thus also in the measure of relative similarity. Counterfactual account of causation is briefly reviewed. Som...

Presuppositions, provisos, and probability

Theories of presupposition in the tradition associated with Karttunen, Stalnaker and Heim relate presupposition satisfaction to the content of conversational participants’ epistemic states, usually modeled as sets of worlds. However, converging evidence from recent work on modality and from other areas of cognitive science suggests that epistemic states are better thought of as having the riche...
